The Blood of Jesus Christ
“For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.” Leviticus 17:11
God has created our bodies with the requirement of blood to maintain life functions. It transports oxygen and nutrients to each of our trillions of cells, and removes carbon dioxide and waste from them. Our blood is also our defense against infections, cuts and other physical injuries. An in-depth analysis of our overall health is possible by an examination of our blood.
Truly, "the life of the flesh is in the blood."
It is blood that makes atonement, or expiation, for our sin, by reason of its life giving properties.
In the beginning, after the Fall, animal sacrifices were required by God as a temporal covering of sins, yet "...it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins." Hebrews 10:4
Animal sacrifices were inadequate to fully atone for human sin, but were a type of portent of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ: "Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold. But with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot." 1 Peter 1:18-19.
Jesus told His disciples what His coming death would accomplish: “For this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:28
"Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is,
the devil." Hebrews 2:14
It was absolutely necessary for our salvation that Jesus shed His blood: "Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins." Hebrews 9:22
Through the blood of Christ, we are set apart and sanctified as Holy: "So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through His own blood." Hebrews 13:12
"Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God." Romans 5:9
The redeemed will sing His praises throughout eternity, for He purchased their souls at a great price: "And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are You to take the scroll and to open its seals, for You were slain, and by Your blood You ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.” Revelation 5:9
